Brown University Ranks Tennessee Web Site Best in Nation

NASHVILLE - (September 25, 2002) - Tennessee's official state Web site, www.TennesseeAnytime.org, ranked first in the nation in Brown University's third annual survey of state e-government performance.

"We've taken government online and to the people and are constantly working to keep Tennessee on the cutting edge of technology," Gov. Don Sundquist said. "Our focus on e-government in Tennessee has not only made it easier for citizens to do business with the state, it has helped cut costs and make state government more efficient, effective and user friendly."

Researchers at the Taubman Center for Public Policy at Brown University tracked Tennessee's rise from fourth place in 2001, to the top spot this year among 1,206 state government sites surveyed.

"In less than two years, Tennessee has gone from having a relatively small Web presence to being ranked best in the nation," said Richard Rognehaugh, Deputy Commissioner of Finance and Administration and Chief Information Officer. "We strive to provide online services that make life easier for Tennessee's citizens and businesses, and I'm delighted that our straightforward approach to e-government has garnered national attention for Tennessee."

Launched in April 2001, TennesseeAnytime offers a wide range of online constituent services, including driver's license renewals, tax filings, business name and corporation searches, child support payment summaries, TennCare eligibility verification and health professional licensing renewals.

The Brown survey ranked state and federal government Web sites based on information and database availability, Web site responsiveness, privacy and security policies, and the number of online services.

TennesseeAnytime has more than one million visitors a month, and since its inception has hosted more than six million e-government transactions. Much of the traffic comes from the more than 60 percent of qualified TennCare providers accessing TennCare eligibility information online, and the nearly 120,000 citizens that have renewed their driver's license or updated their addresses online.
