Knox County vital statistics public documents (births & deaths)

Despite being so hard to believe that it might blow the minds of most folks alive today, Tennessee required no formal registration of deaths or births until 1914. Certified copies of birth or death certificates can be obtained from the State Vital Records Office in Nashville, or the Knox County Health Dept. Vital Records Office in Knoxville.

State Vital Records Offices maintain birth records dating back to January 1, 1949, while the Knox County Archives contain some birth records dating back to 1881. Conversely, statewide death record databases go back longer than 50 years, but localized Knox County death records are limited to a 5-year chronological timespan.

With these caveats firmly in mind, please contact whichever above-mentioned source(s) may be most appropriate for your specific needs as listed below:

Knox County Sheriff’s Department keeps very good records

Judging by numerous outward signs posted very conspicuously in various cyberspaces, the Knox County Tennessee Sheriff takes his job seriously and gets it done quite well by locking up bad guys in local jails – right where they belong. One prime example of potentially high public value is an online inmate locator searchable by subject name with alphabetized embedded links which is available at the Knox County Sheriff website.
