Origin of State Name

Tanasi was one of the main Cherokee towns. The word “Tanasi”, or “Tennessee,” was also the name of the river. It later became the name of the region and state.

State Nickname

Tennessee's nickname is “The Volunteer State,” which originated during the War of 1812 when thousands of Tennesseans enlisted in response to Governor Willie Blount’s call for volunteers.
