| Tennessee Awarded Grant for Online Learning Initiative |
| 11/15/2005 |
Governor Phil Bredesen announced today The National Governor’s Association has awarded Tennessee a $100,000 grant to increase the availability of online learning programs in math and science. The e4TN virtual learning initiative will expand Tennessean’s access to college preparatory classes in rural and high poverty urban school districts.
“School systems in Tennessee should offer the most advanced curriculum and technological opportunities for its students,” said Bredesen. “This grant will allow us to build upon our strong foundation and provide availability to rigorous classes in high schools across the state.”
The e4TN project will develop and pilot online courses in mathematics, advanced science, and foreign languages. The Department of Education will partner with local school districts to enhance students’ accessibility and proficiency with technology. Teachers will also receive training in the delivery of online classes for their students.
“We must provide advanced coursework to all students in Tennessee,” said Commissioner Seivers. “The e4TN project is an excellent example of a progressive educational partnership between local school districts, the state, and the NGA. This tool will allow students to meet our college-readiness expectations.”
In February, Tennessee will send a team to the NGA conference on data quality. This conference will help states identify data needs and facilitate thorough evaluation of programs to close the achievement gap. The team will build strategies for bringing the best practices to schools across the state.
The long term goals of this grant partnership are to advance high school improvement through technology with virtual learning; expand AP participation in all school districts, and develop a statewide longitudinal K-16 data system.
